Infographic titled Editing for a Quality Product. There are lots of different types of editing, each focusing on a different part of a text, at different stages of its development. Substantive editing considers how well your text works as a whole and how effectively it delivers its message or narrative. It doesn't focus on the detail but offers constructive feedback as comments or in a report, and suggested rewrites or revisions to make your writing more compelling. Copy-editing gets to the nitty-gritty of your text before it's set into its final publication format, correcting errors of spelling, punctuation and grammar. It focuses on the detail, resolving inconsistencies of style as well as highlighting any parts of the text that are unclear or that might be confusing to a reader. Proofreading is the last stage of the editing process It focuses on resolving any issues introduced during the typesetting process where the final design and layout are applied. It's a character-by-character, word-by-word review to make sure your text is as close to perfect as it can be when it is published!
