Writing is a process, whether you're writing a blog post, a business report or an academic thesis. Effective writing depends on understanding your message and how you will deliver it before putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard. This infographic explains four basic steps for effective writing to make sure your works work for you from the very start. Concept. Before you start writing, you need to understand what it is you want to communicate; the primary message you want to share. You also need to know who you are writing for and why. Establishing these basics now means that you're planning and writing with your goal in mind. Research. Once you know what you want to write about and the message you want to convey, be sure to do your research so your writing has integrity and stands up to scrutiny. This stage includes investigation into not only your subject and themes to support your message, but also your audience to make sure your writing meets their needs in a way that is accessible to them. Plan. At the planning stage, you are developing your concept – now developed further with research – into an outline. Depending on what it is you're writing, this could be a contents list, a storyboard or a mind map; anything that allows you to explore how you will structure your text and identify the main points you want to include. Write. Now you're ready to start writing. Be prepared to write a draft and then to rewrite it – probably more than once. The writing stage is an iterative process and it's here that editorial support can be invaluable, from helping with content and structure to copyediting and proofreading for that professional finish.
